Taking lessons is the single-best way to improve your game. And choosing a PGA Professional for your golf lessons is not just a good option, it’s absolutely the best one.
Each PGA Professional undertakes the PGA Training Programme, which ensures PGA-qualified coaches have an elite understanding of the game. From mastering the technical elements of coaching to understanding the diverse ways people learn, the PGA Training Programme ensures every graduate is fully equipped to deliver a tailored, insightful and enjoyable learning experience for golfers of all levels.
Denise Hastings, a PGA Master Coach and head of her own golf school, shares her experiences as to what each and every PGA Pro goes through on the training programme to make them qualified to teach golfers like you.
What was your experience of The PGA’s training programme?
It was great, learning so many different things about the golf industry. How to run a business, club repairs and of course the art of coaching. And the trainees going through their PGA training now will be way more knowledgeable than I was.
How do you think it helped prepare you for becoming a golf coach?
Massive. I came off a professional tour, where all we did was play, so it was a big learning curve, and it still is to this day, on how to coach different people, from children to senior players. They all need something different.
What did the programme teach you that has helped with your own golf school?
I think about how to deal with different people with different wants and needs.
How did the training programme help you and other golf coaches be more adept at teaching amateur golfers?
Understanding how people learn. We are all different, so we learn differently. Some people “feel” how to play and others need to “see” what to do. Having those tools and understanding what to do is a massive help.
How important is the programme for up-and-coming golf coaches?
Very important. The programme gives you a good grounding in the art of coaching and dealing with people. Then it is up to the individual to go out and learn more by watching other PGA pros teach and through further studying.
Why does choosing a PGA-qualified pro ensure the best quality of coaching?
All PGA professionals have gone through a massive three-year course, taking them through all the aspects they need to get them off and running in the coaching world. They have had support from PGA tutors for the three years, helping them every step of the way.
