Arm and hand placement are critical to a consistent and powerful golf swing. As your only points of contact with the club, your hands must be positioned correctly on the grip to ensure proper mechanics and ball striking.

PGA Professional Ashley Jones emphasises how common mistakes like a crooked left hand or weak grip can lead to a chain of compensations, ultimately preventing clean, compressed contact with the ball.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide from Ashley to help you set up correctly:

  1. Straighten your arms and point your thumbs up.
  2. Mimic turning right in a car. This motion helps both arms rotate naturally to the right.
  3. Grip the club from this position.
  4. Check your structure. Your lead arm should now feel more structured, with 2–3 knuckles visible on the grip. Your right elbow should face slightly forward, with a slightly stronger right-hand position.
  5. Swing on-plane. This setup promotes a more efficient swing path, helping you strike the ball before the turf for solid, compressed shots.
