Golf is a simple game at heart. If you have a quicker swing speed, you’ll be able to hit the golf ball further. But, building up your swing speed isn’t just about swinging the golf club harder. To give you the edge off the tee, we asked PGA Professional and full-time coach Daniel Wood to share some simple tips that will have you outdriving your friends in no time.
1 Check your grip
First things first: all golfers need to make sure that our grip is helping max out speed and not hindering it. You can do this by ensuring the club is running through the fingers of your lead hand. This will give you a much better chance of developing more speed through better wrist angles. If you place the club too much in the palm of your hand you are likely to decrease these angles.
2 Use the ground for power
Just swinging your arms won’t create anywhere near our maximum speed potential. Using the ground to load and unload your lead leg like Rory McIlroy is great to increase your speed. Get your weight moving from your trail foot to your lead foot in transition before pushing up and clearing your left side out the way.
3 Train and train to dial up the speed
Practise at a higher intensity than you play. Do this by making longer and more aggressive swings of the golf club. These might feel a little out of control but don’t worry – the goal here is not to hit a target but simply to increase your clubhead speed. This process shouldn’t be a one-off, but something you should aim to do weekly, if not more often. Think of it like joining the gym. You aren’t going to get a six pack after one day in the gym and your swing speed won’t increase by just training once.
4 Ensure your speed arrives at the crucial moment
Lots of club players may look like they swinging fast to the naked eye. But if you actually measure them on launch monitors, it’s much slower than you would think. This is because all their speed is in the takeaway and at the start of downswing – not through the ball. Try swinging an alignment stick or a cane and listen to where the maximum swish noise is. Your aim should be to make it as loud as possible at and around impact.
5 Keep stretching and rotating
Being able to create a bigger shoulder and hip rotation in the backswing will allow you to generate much more power. Think of it like an elastic band. The more we can increase the stretch, the more explosive the output. Stretching as part of your golf and daily routine could help massively here.
