It can be hard enough just trying to get out of one, but what are the rules when your ball is in a bunker? This PGA Play guide explains all.
Is there anything a new golfer fears more than their ball ending up in the sand?
Trying to get a handle on the rules that apply in a bunker might come a distant second to just trying to escape the ferocious trap.
But when is it OK to touch the sand? What if there is a stone near your ball? What if the sand moves when you’re taking a shot?
These are the main do’s and don’ts when your ball is in a bunker…
You are allowed to
- Move loose impediments like stones – just make sure not to move your ball when doing so
- Measure, mark, lift, replace or take other actions under a Rule of Golf
- Lean on a club to rest, prevent a fall or to stay balance
- Place or throw a club into a bunker
- Smooth the bunker to care for the course
- Dig in with your feet to take a stance for a practice swing or shot
- Strike the sand in frustration or anger (but your greenkeepers might have something to say about it!)
But you are not allowed to
- Touch the sand with your club in the area right in front or behind the ball
- Touch the sand when making the backswing of a stroke
- Deliberately touch the sand to test its condition and get information for your next shot – that applies whether it’s with a club, your hand, a rake, or any other object
- Touch the sand when making a practice swing
