Less can be more in this game. We all want to hit more fairways and greens with a controlled, consistent swing. In this lesson, PGA Professional Steve Johnston delivers a simple tutorial that will help you hit those targets.

The less moving parts you have in your swing the better, and that’s the focus of this tutorial as it looks at controlling the low point and levers of the motion.

Steve encourages you (if you’re right-handed) to take the address position and add more weight on to your left side – your lead side - and maintain that weight as the club goes back so that you stay on top of the ball.

A straight left arm, meanwhile, acts as a lever to control the low point of the arc of your club.

This may reduce both the length of your backswing and your range of motion. But, because there are less moving parts, the swing is more structured and there is a better chance of generating a strike that comes out of the middle of the clubface.

Left leg, left arm, left pressure? Focus on the left and you’ll be on the right track.
