The most common wedges
Most beginner golfers will start with two wedges:
Pitching Wedge (PW)
Usually between 44–46 degrees, this club is great for longer approach shots, bump-and-run shots near the green, and full swings from shorter distances.
Sand Wedge (SW)
Typically 54–56 degrees, the sand wedge is designed to help you escape bunkers, but it’s also very useful for short shots around the green where you need the ball to go up quickly and stop faster.
Other wedge options you might see
As you play more, you may notice wedges with different degrees. These give you more choice and control:
Gap Wedge (GW) – around 48–52 degrees
Fills the distance gap between a pitching wedge and sand wedge. Ideal for controlled shots when a pitching wedge feels too strong.
Lob Wedge (LW) – around 58–60 degrees
Used for very short shots where you need extra height, such as hitting over a bunker or stopping the ball quickly near the pin.
You don’t need every wedge to start with - learning how to use one or two well is far more important.
When to use each wedge
The key for beginners is choosing the club that feels comfortable and focusing on clean contact rather than power.
